Phenom II X4 955 BE: Neue AMD-CPU im Test plus AM3-Launch (Quelle: PCGamesHardware )

"The £200 AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition AM3 CPU brings the fight to higher-specified Intel Core 2 Quads and knocks on Core i7's door. Core i5, when launched, should put it back in its place, but the AMD price-chopping machine may well be called into action again. The X4 955 BE is a good buy at £200 but a mediocre one if priced at £250. "

"The Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition and the X4 945 will be available immediately for $245 and $225, respectively (the 955 BE has already popped up on NewEgg). Pair one of these processors with an enthusiast-class 790FX or GX-based socket AM3 motherboard and 4GB of DDR3-1333 memory and you've got the makings of a powerful desktop platform for about $450. That's not exactly cheap, but considering the performance and overclockability of the platform, it certainly represents a good value. Yes, Intel's similarly clocked Core 2 Quads and Core i7 processors staill maintain a performance advantage, but there is no denying that AMD's Dragon platform is an attractive option that has only been enhanced by the introduction of these new CPUs."

"With the Phenom II X4 955BE AMD brings a very mature, fast and stable processor to the market. If you crave for some more performance, you can overclock it very well."

"AMD’s new Phenom 2 X4 955 Black Edition is the first of their processors to be worth considering against the Core-i7 brand. While there is nothing from the Phenom 2 range to compete with the 940 and 965EE, the comparison with the i7-920 is quite interesting. On the whole the Intel chip is faster with only a few scenarios where the Phenom 2 955 comes close (gaming and music encoding) we must however take price into consideration. In that area the AMD chips are very attractive, building a high spec 790FX/955/DDR3 system is significantly cheaper than a X58/920/DDR3 system with the same options such as Quad CrossFireX."

"The Phenom II X4 955 & X4 945 processors are certainly a welcome addition to the AMD lineup. AMD is just starting with socket AM3 so it should be a solid investment for drop-in CPU upgrades. With the recent launch of the Radeon HD 4890 video card, and now the Phenom II X4 955 processor, AMD is pushing hard to win the hearts (and dollars) of enthusiasts and gamers."

"AMD knew what it had in this CPU: practically a mirror image of the Core 2 Quad Q9550. They've done two smart things, as a result. They've priced the chip right and have given it an unlocked multiplier to simplify overclocking. Add to those things the fact that Socket AM3 seems to have a better upgrade path than LGA775, and the Phenom II X4 955 looks to be the smarter choice for most consumers, should they be choosing between these two products."

"It has taken AMD more than long enough, but the company is finally in a situation where its processors are competitive in the performance mainstream market segment. The Phenom II X4 955, 945/940 and the Phenom II X3 720 are all very competitive at their price points. Compared to the Core 2 Quad Q9550 the new X4 955 generally comes out ahead."

"Phenom II continues to get better and faster and the Socket 955 and 945 are great additions to the AMD lineup. When it comes to rendering and tasks that can take advantage of Hyperthreading, AMD has a tougher time but when it comes to game and tasks for most people, AMD offers much more value in a much less expensive but robust platform full of options and tweaking for enthusiasts such as unlocked multiplier at a low entry price and AMD Overdrive software."
