Day 11 - 15 May 2021 - The teams break into gallop​

The Sprint has begun. We now know: The final day of the Pentathlon will bring not only the decision of the Marathon, but also of the Javelin Throw. And today, Cross Country will be decided. It's now full throttle for the teams; any small weakness will now be punished. Those who are too slow will get eaten, errm, overtaken.

Javelin Throw (WCG - Microbiome Immunity Project)
The fourth throw reveals the tactics of many teams. Many had hoped to get by with three very good throws, but by far not all of them actually manage to do so. P3D secured Gold with three very far throws and can now concentrate on Marathon and Sprint. This is different for SG (#2) and TSBT (#4). The Germans need to hope for a blunder of the Scots because these
have a small advantage in throwing distance. It is not much, which keeps it exciting until the last second.

TAAT no longer need to think about whether or not to step up once more. #4 was carved in stone by yesterday's throws of the duo before them. It remains to be seen if RKN (#5) or CNT (#6) will throw again. Especially RKN could lose two places if they skip. Aside from CNT, LTT (#7) pose an acute threat. On the other hand, neither RKN nor CNT can actively defend themselves against LTT whose last two throws were better.

2ch in #8 are not in safety yet either, since AF (#9) could still pass with a strong throw. Chinese Dream catapulted themselves into #10 with the third good throw but will have yet to relinquish one place, as will BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#11). That's because [H] saved their strength yesterday and, in theory, even has a chance at #5.

Ukraine in #13 no longer have an opportunity for improvement, they rather have to hope that ISWT (#14) and EVGA (#16) miss at their final throw. Meisterkühler (#15) still sit between these two but have no chance to advance. OCN follow in #17 and is in a clinch with Team China (#18) and AMD Users (#19). There is not a lot separating this trio, and it remains to be seen who of them will throw better. BOINC.Italy (#20) are safe, certainly nothing is going to happen in front as well as behind.

BOINC@Poland (#21) delivered good equal throws, different from BOINCstats (#22). The chief statisticians could attack once more with their last throw and overpower the Poles. UBT too cannot be sure to keep #23, as Crystal Dream (#24) used the previous two throws to create an opportunity for overtake on the final day. Russia will probably have to hand over #25 too, because LITOMYSL (#26) apparently saved up a little surprise for the last throw. With this throw, they could advance as high as #12. At the end, BOINC@Pfalz are waiting in #27.

Marathon (SiDock@home)
The teams need to decide on the long track whether to make do with their current placements or to risk everything once more. Since the distances are larger than in the other disciplines, the strategists must not miss the right window of opportunity. I'm afraid the medals are taken by now. P3D are leading ahead of TAAT and TSBT. They are moving considerably faster than the rest of the field. SG lost contact too and apparently settled for managing their 4th place. Which they certainly can, because LTT (#5) have fallen back considerably by now.

CNT tries to hold #6 but just can't get rid of [H] (#7) and AF (#8). They are sticking to the feet of the Czech like bubblegum. ISWT will probably hand #9 over to RKN (#10) soon. Maybe ISWT are thinking they reached the goal already or are the Scientists dehydrated? Where is the Pfalz, maybe they need fermented grapes.

BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#11) probably won't be able to take advantage of ISWT's weakness, the speed is simply too low for that. But it is sufficient to keep Ukraine (#12) at bay. Maybe 2ch (#13) could still become dangerous to the Australians; at least the Japanese are the fastest team in this region. Meanwhile, Crystal Dream are securing #14, followed by OCN (#15) at a safe distance.

BOINC.Italy (#16) and AMD Users (#17) are still eyeing each other very thoroughly. Every little twitch of the other is being registered, and each one is ready to react on attack. Let's see who dares to leave cover first. We are observing the same situation behind, between EVGA (#18) and BOINC@Poland (#19), only that the distance is much smaller, virtually in Corona infection radius... Meisterkühler (#20) are staying out of this for now but could still play a role.

UBT should be safe in #21, whereas #22 is not taken yet by a long shot. LITOMYSL still have got the best chances, but Chinese Dream (#23) are close up, and BOINCstats (#24) and Team China (#25) are in striking distance too. BOINC@Pfalz are probably going to cross the finish line in #26, followed by Russia.

Cross Country (Einstein@Home)
The last hours of the tour over hill and over dale are in progress. Now the hot phase begins, in which teams need to do some soul-searching and mobilize everything which can be squeezed out of the hardware yet.

P3D are leading the field with a substantial advantage, followed by TAAT who would rather like to harvest the Green Planet, considering the overall standing. But TSBT are already lurking behind, and I am not trusting appearances. Is there an attack on Silver about to be launched?

With visible exertion of force, SG stumbled into #4, overtaking BOINC@AUSTRALIA in #5. But the distances are nothing much, especially with respect to CNT (#6) and [H] (#7) who both possess potential for a final acceleration. And maybe we will still be surprised by RKN (#8) who sped up massively and established contact.

Because of the interim spurt of CNT, OCN (#9) fell back somewhat, and LTT (#10) had to yield a place too. Neither of them can match the pace in front, but they are lucky that AF (#11), BOINC@Poland (#12), and Ukraine (#13) are already quite a bit behind. EVGA are valiantly holding #14 but need to keep an eye on UBT (#15). The difference between the duo is small, and thus the decision shall happen in the coming hours.

BOINC.Italy (#16) and LITOMYSL (#17) profit from the weakness of ISWT (#18) who remain on a downward slope. And that's not all, as 2ch (#19) and Crystal Dream (#20) are approaching fast. Further behind, the Chinese duo slipped down in the ranking. Team China is only in #21 now, Chinese Dream in #22. BOINCstats are meaning business and try to safeguard place 23 which they nabbed from AMD Users (#24). Meisterkühler (#25), BOINC@Pfalz (#26), and Russia (#27) are concluding the current field, among which Pfalz are pushing the pedal to the metal right now.

Sprint (NFS@Home)
The Pentathlon will probably be decided on the short track this year. P3D recognized this and threw everything available on it, and are currently rewarded with #1. TSBT are in #2 at this time, followed by TAAT (#3) who finally woke up. With a shocking boom they shot past the startled SG (#4).

Again swiftly on their way are RKN in #5; the Rechenkrafters keep AF (#6) behind themselves, who in turn are hearing LTT (#7) panting behind. CNT follows in #8 and is trying to shed Chinese Dream (#9). [H] (#10) are in a slump right now and are losing contact. This is an invitation to BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#11) to stop by.

It's tight between LITOMYSL (#12), Ukraine (#13), OCN (#14), and Meisterkühler (#15). This quartet is easily keeping EVGA (#16), 2ch (#17), and BOINC.Italy (#18) at a distance. While UBT (#19) are about to get left behind, BOINC@Poland and BOINCstats are scuffling for #20, outcome uncertain. Visibly irritated, the AMD Users (#22) are trying to make sense of the situation and are still pondering what to do. There is an appreciable gap afterwards. Team China (#21), Russia (#22), and BOINC@Pfalz (#23) are taking it rather easy, whereas Crystal Dream and ISWT overslept the start.

Overall Standings
P3D clearly latched on to the top. TAAT (#2) are letting go of too many important points at Javelin and Sprint now, giving TSBT (#3) a chance for Silver. This could become the Pentathlon of fourth places for SG (#4), who might not make it for precious metal but built a comfortable advantage over their pursuers.

While SG practically haven't anything left to lose, things look entirely different for CNT (#5). RKN (#6) and LTT (#7) are sticking to the Czech feet and wait for their chance. The focus of [H] (#8) and AF (#9) is probably not directed ahead as much as it is on who of the two will be better in the end.

It appears BOINC@AUSTRALIA will finish in the top 10 rather easily. Three teams however will fight for #11: OCN (#11), 2ch (#12), Ukraine (#13). Place 14 is suitable for EVGA, whereas ISWT are now merely in #15 due to the various dropouts. But at least this place is secure since BOINC.Italy (#16) don't seem strong enough. Chinese Dream are easily following in #17.

A quartet is making efforts for #18 now. LITOMYSL (#18) are in the most favorable position, followed by UBT (#19) and BOINC@Poland (#20) very close behind. And Meisterkühler (#21) are drawing attention to themselves with their good current Sprint result. And maybe the AMD Users could still manage to turn their tetrathlon into a pentathlon.

Coming along at the end of the field are Crystal Dream (#23), Team China (#24), BOINCstats (#25), BOINC@Pfalz (#26), and Russia (#27).

The pulse is gradually rising to problematic levels. So many variables and uncertainties:

- Can SG still achieve the miracle at Cross Country?
- Are TAAT reaching for Silver at the Sprint?
- Will TSBT take Silver at the Javelin?

You see it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Tag 11 - 15.05.2021 - Die Teams im Sauseschritt​

Der Sprint hat begonnen. Wir wissen jetzt: Am letzten Tag des Pentathlon entscheidet sich neben dem Marathon auch das Speerwerfen. Und heute wird das Querfeldein entschieden. Jetzt heißt es Vollgas für die Teams, kleine Schwächen werden bestraft. Wer zu langsam ist, wird gefressen, äh, überholt.

Speerwerfen (WCG - Microbiome Immunity Project)
Mit dem vierten Wurf wird die Taktik vieler Teams deutlich. Viele von ihnen haben gehofft, mit drei sehr guten Würfen auszukommen, doch das schaffen bei Weitem nicht alle. P3D hat sich mit drei sehr weiten Würfen Gold gesichert und kann sich auf den Marathon und Sprint konzentrieren. Das sieht bei SG (#2) und TSBT (#3) anders aus. Allerdings müssen die Deutschen auf einen kleinen Patzer der Schotten hoffen, denn diese haben einen leichten Weitenvorteil. Viel ist es nicht und so bleibt es hier spannend bis in die letzte Sekunde.

TAAT braucht nun nicht mehr darüber nachzudenken, ob sie nachlegen müssen. Die gestrigen Würfe des Duos vor ihnen haben #4 fest gemeißelt. Abzuwarten bleibt, ob RKN (#5) und CNT (#6) nochmal werfen. Insbesondere RKN könnte beim Auslassen zwei Plätze verlieren, neben CNT ist vor allem LTT (#7) eine akute Gefahr. Allerdings können sich weder RKN, noch CNT dagegen wehren, denn die letzten beiden Würfe von LTT waren besser.

2ch auf #8 ist auch noch nicht sicher, denn AF (#9) könnte mit einem kräftigen Wurf noch vorbeigehen. Chinese Dream hat sich mit dem dritten guten Wurf auf #10 katapultiert, muss aber genauso wie BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#11) noch einen Platz abgeben. Denn [H] hat sich gestern die Kräfte gespart und sogar theoretisch noch die Chance auf #5.

Die Ukraine auf #13 hat keine Chance mehr auf Verbesserung, muss eher hoffen das ISWT (#14) und EVGA (#16) ihren letzten Wurf verwerfen. Die Meisterkühler (#15) liegen noch zwischen den beiden, haben aber keine Chance mehr nach vorne. OCN folgt auf #17 und befindet sich mit Team China (#18) und AMD Users (#19) im Clinch. Das Trio trennt nicht viel und es bleibt abzuwarten, wer von denen besser wirft. Sicher ist BOINC.Italy (#20), weder nach vorne noch hinten geht wohl etwas.

BOINC@Poland (#21) hat gute gleichwertige Würfe hingelegt, anders als BOINCstats (#22). Doch die Chefstatistiker könnten mit dem letzten Wurf noch einmal angreifen und die Polen überrumpeln. Auch UBT kann sich nicht sicher sein #23 zu behalten, denn Crystal Dream (#24) hat die letzten beiden Würfe genutzt und sich eine Überholgelegenheit am Schlusstag geschaffen. Russia wird wohl auch #25 noch abgeben müssen, denn LITOMYSL (#26) hat sich die Überraschung wohl für für den letzten Wurf aufgehoben. Denn mit diesem Wurf könnte es bis auf #12 vorwärts gehen. Am Ende wartet die Pfalz auf #27.

Marathon (SiDock@home)
Auf der Langstrecke müssen die Teams sich entscheiden, ob sie sich mit der Platzierung zufrieden geben oder nochmal alles riskieren. Da die Abstände größer als bei anderen Disziplinen sind, dürfen die Strategen auch das richtige Zeitfenster nicht verpassen. Leider scheinen die Medaillen vergeben. P3D führt vor TAAT und TSBT. Sie sind deutlich flotter unterwegs als das restliche Feld. Auch SG hat abreißen lassen und scheint ganz bewusst #4 nur noch zu verwalten. Das können sie auch noch, denn LTT (#5) ist doch schon deutlich zurück.

CNT versucht #6 zu halten, wird aber [H] (#7) und AF (#8) einfach nicht los. Wie Kaugummi kleben die beiden an den Füßen der Tschechen. ISWT wird wohl bald #9 an RKN (#10) abgeben, vielleicht denken sie ja, dass sie schon im Ziel sind. Oder sind die Wissenschaftler dehydriert. Wo ist eigentlich die Pfalz, vielleicht brauchen sie ja gegorene Trauben?

Diese Schwäche wird BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#11) wohl nicht ausnutzen können, das Tempo ist einfach zu langsam. Allerdings reicht es, um die Ukraine (#12) auf Abstand zu halten. Vielleicht könnte 2ch (#13) den Australiern noch gefährlich werden, die Japaner sind zumindest das schnellste Team in dieser Region. Derweil sichert Crystal Dream #14 ab, gefolgt in sicherem Abstand von OCN (#15).

BOINC.Italy (#16) und AMD Users (#17) beäugen sich weiter sehr genau. Jedes Zucken des anderen wird registriert und jeder ist bereit, sofort auf einen Angriff zu reagieren. Mal sehen, wer sich als erstes aus der Deckung wagt. Die gleiche Situation haben wir dahinter zwischen EVGA (#18) und BOINC@Poland (#19), nur dass der Abstand deutlich geringer ist, quasi in Corona-Infektionsreichweite... Dahinter halten sich die Meisterkühler (#20) noch raus, könnten aber durchaus noch eine Rolle spielen.

UBT dürfte auf #21 sicher sein, wogegen #22 noch lange nicht vergeben ist. Noch hat LITOMYSL die besten Karten, aber Chinese Dream (#23) ist dicht dran und auch BOINCstats (#24) und Team China (#25) sind durchaus noch in Schlagdistanz. Die Pfalz wird wohl auf #26 ins Ziel gehen, gefolgt von Russia.

Querfeldein (Einstein@Home)
Die letzten Stunden der Tour über Stock und Stein laufen. Jetzt beginnt die heiße Phase, wo die Teams nochmal in sich gehen müssen und alles mobilisieren, was noch aus der Hardware zu quetschen ist.

P3D führt mit deutlichem Abstand das Feld an, gefolgt von TAAT, die im Hinblick auf die Gesamtwertung schon gerne den Grünen Planeten abernten würden. Doch dahinter lauert auch noch TSBT, denen ich derzeit nicht so richtig traue. Kommt da noch die Attacke auf Silber?

Mit einer deutlichen Kraftanstrengung hat sich SG auf #4 gestolpert und konnte so BOINC@AUSTRALIA #5 überholen. Doch die Abstände sind insgesamt noch überschaubar, vor allem im Hinblick auf CNT (#6) und [H] (#7), die beide durchaus noch Endbeschleunigungspotential haben. Und vielleicht überrascht uns ja auch noch RKN (#8), die massiv Tempo machen und den Anschluss hergestellt haben.

Durch den Zwischenspurt von CNT ging es für OCN (#9) etwas zurück und auch LTT (#10) musste einen Platz hergeben. Beide können den Tempo vorne nicht mehr folgen, haben aber auch das Glück, dass AF (#11), BOINC@Poland (#12) und Ukraine (#13) mit Abstand schon etwas zurückliegen. EVGA hält wacker #14, muss aber ein Auge auf UBT (#15) haben. Der Abstand zwischen dem Duo ist gering und so wird die Entscheidung in den nächsten Stunden fallen.

BOINC.Italy (#16) und LITOMYSL (#17) profitieren von der Schwäche von ISWT (#18), für die es weiter abwärts geht. Und das wird es wohl nicht gewesen sein, denn 2ch (#19) und Crystal Dream (#20) kommen sehr schnell näher. Dahinter ging es für das chinesische Duo nach hinten. Team China nur noch auf #21, Chinese Dream auf #22. BOINCstats macht dahinter ernst und versucht, den von den AMD Users (#24) abgenommenen Platz 23 zu sichern. Die Meisterkühler (#25), BOINC@Pfalz (#26) und Russia (#27) beschließen das aktuelle Feld, wobei die Pfälzer gerade kräftig Gas gegeben haben.

Sprint (NFS@Home)
Auf der Kurzstrecke wird sich der Pentathlon in diesem Jahr wohl entscheiden. P3D hat das erkannt und alles reingeworfen, was verfügbar ist, und wird aktuell mit #1 belohnt. TSBT derzeit auf #2, gefolgt von TAAT (#3), die endlich aufgewacht sind. SG (#4) wurde gerade durch TAAT aufgeschreckt, denn diese sind mit einem Wahnsinnswumms vorbeigegangen.

Wieder super unterwegs ist RKN auf #5, die Rechenkraftler halten AF (#6) hinter sich, die wiederum LTT (#7) hinter sich hecheln hören. CNT folgt auf #8 und versucht gerade Chinese Dream (#9) abzuschütteln. [H] (#10) hat gerade einen kleinen Durchhänger und verliert so den Anschluss nach vorne. Damit lädt man BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#11) geradezu ein, mal vorbeizuschauen.

Eng geht es zwischen LITOMYSL (#12), Ukraine (#13), OCN (#14) und den Meisterkühlern (#15) zu. Das Quartett hält EVGA (#16), 2ch (#17) und BOINC.Italy (#18) locker auf Distanz. Während UBT (#19) dabei ist, den Anschluss zu verlieren, balgen sich BOINC@Poland und BOINCstats um #20, mit ungewissem Ausgang. Die AMD Users (#22) versuchen die Situation sichtlich irritiert einzuordnen und überlegen noch, was sie tun. Eine sichtbare Lücke gibt es dahinter. Team China (#21), Russia (#22) und BOINC@Pfalz (#23) sind eher gemütlich unterwegs, während Crystal Dream und ISWT den Start verpennt haben.

Gesamtwertung
P3D hat sich recht klar an der Spitze festgebissen. TAAT (#2) lässt beim Speer und derzeit beim Sprint zu viele wichtige Punkte liegen und gibt somit TSBT (#3) die Chance auf Silber. Für SG (#4) könnte es der Pentathlon der vierten Plätze werden, was wohl nicht für Edelmetall reicht, aber den Vorsprung auf die Verfolger recht komfortabel werden lässt.

Während SG praktisch nichts mehr zu verlieren hat, sieht es für CNT (#5) völlig anders aus. RKN (#6) und LTT (#7) kleben an den tschechischen Füßen und warten auf ihre Chance. Für die punktgleichen [H] (#8) und AF (#9) geht es wohl weniger darum, sich nach vorne zu orientieren, sondern wer von den beiden am Ende besser sein wird.

Die Top 10 scheint recht locker BOINC@AUSTRALIA zu beschließen. Um #11 werden dagegen drei Teams kämpfen: OCN (#11), 2ch (#12), Ukraine (#13). Platz 14 steht EVGA gut zu Gesicht, wogegen ISWT durch die verschiedenen Aussetzer nur noch auf #15 steht. Dieser scheint derzeit auch gesichert, denn BOINC.Italy (#16) scheint nicht stark genug zu sein. Chinese Dream folgt locker auf #17.

Um #18 ist derzeit ein Quartett bemüht. LITOMYSL (#18) hat derzeit die besten Karten, gefolgt von UBT (#19) und BOINC@Poland (#20), die nur knapp dahinter rangieren. Und auch die Meisterkühler (#21) machen sich durch das gute Sprint-Zwischenergebnis hier bemerkbar. Und vielleicht können ja die AMD Users (#22) aus dem Vier- noch einen Fünfkampf machen.

Am Ende des Feldes sind Crystal Dream (#23), Team China (#24), BOINCstats (#25), BOINC@Pfalz (#26) und Russia (#27) unterwegs.

Langsam steigt der Puls in problematische Höhen. So viele Variablen und Unsicherheiten:

- Kann SG noch beim Querfeldein das Wunder schaffen?
- Greift TAAT beim Sprint nach Silber?
- Holt sich TSBT beim Speer noch Silber?

Ihr seht, es bleibt spannend beim BOINC Pentathlon.
