Day 8 - 12 May 2021 - Halftime

Our valiant Pentathletes made it through the first half of the contest, and slowly the pain is showing on their faces. Now is the time to stand firm and persevere. As they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. There are currently three disciplines in progress, and additionally the teams are busy to prepare for the next Javelin Throw. And at last, the first decision is imminent today:

City Run (PrimeGrid)
The victory of TAAT draws near, but there is certainly still a spark of hope glowing at TSBT (#2). Only the Scots know what they have got left in their legs. P3D seem sure of Bronze, but I trust that SG (#4) will continue to give their all. After them, CNT advanced to #5 and it shall be seen if there is still coming more from there. But we should not write off [H] (#6) and RKN (#7) either; many a man have been caught on the wrong foot on the home stretch.

#8 appears to be the maximum for LTT in the end, but they may still get their chicken broth spoiled by AF (#9). ISWT in #10 are still a conundrum. Will they hold on to their place, or will they be steamrolled by 2ch (#11), OCN (#12), and EVGA (#13) yet? Hot hours are coming up for BOINC.Italy (#14) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#15) too. We may have to rely on the photo-finish camera to capture their difference of a hairbreadth. I don't dare to give a prognosis.

After them it appears that UBT have gotten comfortable in #16, AMD Users in #17, and LITOMYSL in #18. The distances are quite significant here, and it seems everyone wants to keep to themselves. But please don't ask for counseling for loneliness then.

It may get fierce around #19 however. The Ukraine might conquer it before Pfalz (#20). And behind, Crystal Dream are turning up the heat. Although the distance from the Palatine Wine Queens is still significant, the Dreamers have put on seven league boots. BOINCstats (#22) and BOINC@Poland (#23) already have seen their soles from beneath and couldn't do anything about it. But these two have only eyes for each other now anyway. Meisterkühler in 24 would have to accelerate considerably if they wanted to catch up with the duo. This is rather unlikely to achieve for Team China (#25), Chinese Dream (#26), and Russia (#27).

Marathon (SiDock@home)
There is still some time until the decision of the Marathon. P3D reduced speed at the top, such that TAAT are coming a little closer. Let's see whether P3D will get under pressure or control the advantage. In the following duel, TSBT (#3) are breaking away further from SG (#4). The Germans have to take care not to fall behind. Or did they give up on a medal here already and want to get one at the Javelin instead? We will see.

LTT are all on their own in #5. The distance ahead is already large, while their pursuers are not particularly fast but rather busy with themselves. ISWT (#6) continue to show weakness and are put under pressure by CNT (#7), AF (#8), and [H] (#9). There could be changes here soon. RKN (#10) can't match pace with this infernal trio but are able to keep Ukraine (#11) and BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#12) at a distance. These two pursuers are in intimate embrace and can't let go of each other. OCN (#13), Crystal Dream (#14), and 2ch (#15) will ultimately be fighting for #13. The pace of the three is similar, and thus it may take an end spurt to bring about a decision. The same is true for the duo of BOINC.Italy (#16) and AMD Users (#17).

BOINC@PolandPoland needs to worry about #18. The reason: EVGA went past Meisterkühler (#20) into #19 and are taking aim at Poland now. After them, UBT (#21) are troubled with loneliness; nothing much happens in front, and nobody is trying anything in the back. LITOMYSL (#22) and Chinese Dream (#23) are as busy with themselves as BOINCstats (#24) and Team China (#25) are. The speed of Russia (#26) dropped like a stone, and this could be the chance for Pfalz (#27) to grab some points.

Cross Country (Einstein@Home)
P3D are defending their lead over TAAT. After their good start they are now trying to control first place. BOINC@AUSTRALIA's (#3) best ranking in any discipline ever had been 11th place, they might surpass this in this year. They covered all their bases and are securing a strong #3. SG (#4) are remaining behind in striking distance and have TSBT (#5) and OCN (#6) in tow. Even though [H] (#7) dropped in the ranking just now, they too are still in the race for a medal and try everything for a comeback.

There is a larger gap after that. RKN (#8) are holding LTT (#9) at bay with all their might. CNT are still to be found in #10 only. AF are now in #11, in front of BOINC@Poland (#12), Ukraine (#13), and EVGA (#14). This quartet profited from a current period of weakness of Chinese Dream (#15) who almost came to a standstill. ISWT (#16), even though they lost two places, want to take advantage of this Chinese weakness and are approaching with rapid strides. And BOINC.Italy (#17), UBT (#18), and Team China (#19) too are all coming along notably faster than Chinese Dream.

Crystal Dream (#20) and LITOMYSL (#21) are gaining some ground too, but not enough to advance their standings. And thus the two are starting a fatal affair. 2ch (#22) don't dare to approach but stay in front of AMD Users (#23) and BOINstats (#24). Meisterkühler (#25), Russia (#26), and Pfalz (#27) are completing the hurly-burly.

Overall Standings
There is little movement here. TAAT are still in #1, whereas P3D (#2) are waiting for the next Javelin. Afterwards, SG (#3) try to build up a cushion of points against TSBT (#4), knowing all too well that the Scots will fill their account at the Javelin. LTT (#5), [H] (#6), BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#7), and RKN (#8) kept their positions. CNT took seat alongside RKN in #8 due to improvement in the Marathon, and thus #10 is what is left for AF.

No changes behind: ISWT (#11), OCN (#12), 2ch (#13), and EVGA (#14). Ukraine had some good hours, working their way up to #15, to the chagrin of BOINC.Italy (#16). AMD Users advanced to #17, but not on their own. A point loss in the City Run caused BOINC@Poland to drop to #18.

UBT (#19) and Crystal Dream (#20) didn't move, whereas Team China dropped to #21. The current weakness at the Javelin is costing LITOMYSL and Chinese Dream essential points, and thus #22 is all what's left for them for now. BOINCstats are on the lookout in #24 but have to hope for blunders of their competitors. Which is what they should avoid to commit themselves, because neither Meisterkühler (#25), Pfalz (#26), nor Russia (#27) are far away.

The second half of the hardest Pentathlon in the world is confronting us with almost unanswerable questions:

- Can TSBT still attack at the City Run?
- Are SG reaching for Bronze in the Cross Country?
- Will P3D be deprived of victory in the Marathon after all?

You see it remains exciting at the BOINC Pentathlon.

Yours, Jeeper

Jour 8 - 12/05/2021 - Mi-temps
