The rather off-key sirens from Basel could not stop me from returning to the legendary BOINC Pentathlon. In addition, almost nothing can beat I'm having fun, I step on the gas, especially when Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks, and Tim McGraw are blaring out of the speakers.

Thank you pschoefer for the great reports. But now let us give the donkey some rest, because he will have a lot to carry in the next few hours.

With the conclusion of the Javelin Throw, the overall standings are no longer that blurry. Yes, I need new glasses, but the last throws have nevertheless resulted in some final decisions.

Javelin Throw (NFS@Home)
Anyone who had hoped that TAAT would grab the wrong javelin was abruptly shaken from their dreams, as they showed with their last throw that they were fully in control and had mastered the necessary timing. Silver goes to LTT, who had already sealed the deal in the fourth attempt by perfectly managing their power. SG did not show any weakness in the end and did what they needed to do to secure #3, thus claiming what is probably their only medal this year. Congratulations to the top 3 at the Javelin Throw.

In the end, P3D (#4) hoped in vain that the javelin would slip out of SG's hand. Ultimately, they always lacked a little distance, so sheet metal matches their performance. Ukraine (#5) also did what they had to do and were able to fend off the advances of CNT (#6). The Czechs threw excellently yesterday, giving the impression that maybe they could have achieved a little more.

NoTEAM had already secured #7 before the last throw, so they could skip this one. [H] could not afford that. To secure #8, they still needed a minimal distance, and this was clearly exceeded. This dashed the hopes of RKN (#9) to move up one more rank; they did not have to do anything yesterday.

The reason for this was AF (#10), who could no longer attack, but did exactly what was necessary to deny GPUUG (#11) a top 10 rank. Again, there was probably more in it for GPUUG, as their last two throws were superior to those of AF. It shows again that it takes three good, and ideally equally good, attempts. This assessment applies even more to BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#12). They failed to seize the opportunity to catch GPUUG. The second throws stands out so strongly that I am inclined to believe that they did not use their power optimally.

LITOMYSL did their part to secure #13. MK (#14) and EVGA (#15) no longer posed any threat, so all they could have done was stab the javelin in their own feet, which they fortunately did not do. AMD Users (#16) are still puzzling us. Unstable performances, culminating in a rocket javelin yesterday, caused irritation among spectators. A little more stability would have been very useful here and could have pushed the team further up the ranking.

BC was already safe in #17, as BOINC.Italy (#18) could not execute the second throw perfectly. So they also had a chance for more. This does not apply to 2ch (#19). Consistent and not far are not really the real deal. TFFE was able to celebrate #20 extensively, as Russia (#21) is not so good with javelins.

Steeplechase (Einstein@Home)
The medals seem to be awarded here, but appearances can be deceptive. GPUUG (#1) will be hoping that TAAT (#2) does not take them down after all. And maybe LTT (#3) is planning another direct hit. We will see.

While P3D seems to be safe in #4, things could still get close behind them. Ukraine (#5) will have to be prepared for moves from SG (#6). RKN, AF, and NoTEAM are fighting for #11. Everything is still possible in this three-way battle. RKN cannot be sure of anything and AF has every chance, but should be careful. Who will go for an early decision and who will wait until the final minutes?

Behind them, the gaps are more significant. Things could still get close for LITOMYSL (#17), as their lead over 2ch (#18) is not very big. However, it is currently impossible to say if the Japanese are willing or able.

The final hours are underway. Now the teams have to be vigilant and strong. Some of the gaps seem large, but with power and endurance, a lot can still be achieved. Those who are too confident could be in for a rude awakening.

Die ziemlich schief singenden Sirenen aus Basel konnten mich nicht davon abhalten, zum legendären BOINC Pentathlon zurückzukehren. Außerdem kann fast nichts etwas gegen ich hab' Spaß und geb' Gas ausrichten, vor allem wenn Johnny Cash, Garth Brooks und Tim McGraw aus den Boxen erklingen.

Vielen Dank pschoefer für die super Berichte. Doch nun lassen wir den Esel etwas zur Ruhe kommen, denn in den nächsten Stunden wird er einiges zu tragen haben.

Mit dem Ende des Speerwerfens sehen wir auch die Gesamtwertung nicht mehr ganz so verschwommen. Ja, ich benötige eine neue Brille, aber dennoch haben die letzten Würfe einige endgültige Entscheidungen gebracht.

Speerwerfen (NFS@Home)
Wer gehofft hatte, dass TAAT den falschen Speer erwischt, wurde jäh aus seinem Traum gerissen, denn mit dem letzten Wurf zeigten sie, dass sie die Sache voll im Griff hatten und das nötige Timing beherrschten. Silber geht an LTT, die bereits im vierten Versuch alles klargemacht hatten, indem sie dort perfekt ihre Kraft eingeteilt haben. SG gab sich am Ende keine Blöße und tat das Nötige, um #3 zu sichern, und holte sich so die wohl einzige Medaille in diesem Jahr. Herzlichen Glückwunsch an die Top 3 beim Speer.

P3D (#4) hoffte am Ende vergeblich darauf, dass SG der Speer aus der Hand rutscht. Letztlich fehlte immer ein wenig Weite, sodass das Blech den Leistungsstand auch abbildet. Auch Ukraine (#5) tat das, was getan werden musste, und konnte so die Avancen von CNT (#6) abwehren. Die Tschechen haben gestern hervorragend geworfen, wodurch der Eindruck entsteht, dass vielleicht doch etwas mehr drin gewesen wäre.

Für NoTEAM stand #7 bereits vor dem letzten Wurf fest und so konnten sie hier auslassen. Das konnte sich [H] nicht leisten. Um #8 abzusichern, brauchte es noch eine Mindestweite und diese wurde dann auch deutlich übertroffen. Somit platzten die Hoffnungen von RKN (#9), noch einen Platz gutzumachen; selbst musste man ja gestern nicht mehr ran.

Und das lag an AF (#10), die nicht mehr attackieren konnten, aber genau das Notwendige taten, um GPUUG (#11) den Zugang zu den Top 10 zu verwehren. Auch hier ist wohl mehr für GPUUG drin gewesen, da die letzten beiden Würfe denen von AF überlegen waren. Es zeigt sich wieder, es braucht eben drei gute und am besten gleichwertige Versuche. Diese Einschätzung trifft noch besser auf BOINC@AUSTRALIA (#12) zu. Die Chance, GPUUG noch abzufangen, wurde nicht genutzt. Der zweite Wurf ragt so stark hervor, dass ich hier geneigt bin einzuschätzen, dass die Kräfte nicht optimal eingesetzt wurden.

LITOMYSL tat das Ihre, um #13 festzumachen. Von MK (#14) und EVGA (#15) drohte ja keine Gefahr mehr und so hätte man sich nur den Speer in die eigenen Füße spießen können, worauf man glücklicherweise verzichtet hat. Rätsel geben uns dann doch AMD Users (#16) auf. Schwankende Würfe mit dem Höhepunkt eines Raketenspeers am gestrigen Tag sorgten für Irritationen bei den Betrachtern. Hier wäre etwas mehr Stabilität wohl sehr sinnvoll gewesen und hätte das Team weiter nach vorn bringen können.

BC hatte #17 schon sicher, da BOINC.Italy (#18) den zweiten Wurf nicht perfekt umsetzen konnte. Auch hier gab es also eine Chance auf mehr. Dies trifft auf 2ch (#19) nicht zu. Gleichmäßig und nicht weit sind eben nicht das Wahre. TFFE konnte #20 ausgiebig feiern, da Russia (#21) es nicht so mit Speeren hat.

Jagdrennen (Einstein@Home)
Hier scheinen die Medaillen verteilt, doch der Schein kann trügen. Bei GPUUG (#1) wird man hoffen, dass man nicht doch noch von TAAT (#2) zur Strecke gebracht wird. Und vielleicht plant ja LTT (#3) noch einen Volltreffer. Wir werden sehen.

Während P3D #4 sicher zu haben scheint, könnte es dahinter noch eng zugehen. Ukraine (#5) muss auf Aktionen von SG (#6) gefasst sein. Um Platz 11 kämpfen RKN, AF und NoTEAM. In diesem Dreikampf ist noch alles drin. RKN kann sich nichts sicher sein und AF hat alle Chancen, sollte aber aufpassen. Wer sucht die frühe Entscheidung und wer wartet bis in die Schlussminuten?

Dahinter sind die Abstände deutlicher. Eng könnte es noch für LITOMYSL (#17) werden, da ihr Vorsprung auf 2ch (#18) nicht sehr groß ist. Ob die Japaner wollen oder können, ist aber derzeit nicht einschätzbar.

Die letzten Stunden laufen. Jetzt müssen die Teams achtsam und stark sein. Die Abstände scheinen teilweise groß, doch mit Kraft und Ausdauer lässt sich noch einiges erreichen. Wer sich zu sicher wiegt, kann ein böses Erwachen erleben.
