Wyse Extends Its Cloud Client Computing Portfolio with the Industry’s Only Mobile Thin “Laptop” Clients Supporting All Desktop and Application Virtualization Environments

The New X Class Addresses Security, Management and Network Availability Challenges for the Mobile Users; Supports VMware View™ 5 Local Mode

SAN JOSE, Calif. – 08/29/2011 - Today at VMworld® 2011, Wyse Technology, the global leader in cloud client computing, today announced its continued industry leading success of the Wyse X class mobile thin clients. The Wyse X class Microsoft Windows and SUSE Linux based platforms support diverse integration with Citrix, Microsoft and VMware. Furthermore, the Wyse mobile thin clients enable remote or travelling workers to work online and offline while remaining secure and synchronized with the virtualized infrastructure by supporting both VMware View™ 5“local mode” and Wyse WSM “cruiser mode”.

This announcement was made in connection with VMworld® 2011, the global conference for virtualization and cloud computing held in Las Vegas August 29th through September 1st at The Venetian. As part of VMworld 2011, Wyse is demonstrating their award-winning virtualization, management and cloud client software and a wide range of thin, zero, mobile and cloud PC client hardware at Booth #1111.

The Wyse X class mobile thin clients combine the management and security benefits of desktop virtualization and cloud computing with the benefits of worker mobility. Today's mobile workforce has struggled with an inconsistent set of desktops, applications and access procedures. To date, highly mobile thin client users could not access virtualized corporate infrastructures when disconnected from the network. Instead, they were forced to manually re-sync offline data with data from their virtual machines; a procedure fraught with errors and security issues. On the other hand, uncontrolled usage of PCs by mobile workers remains an enormous security issue. With the Wyse X class, users no longer require actual connectivity to their virtual machines to enjoy the full benefits of VDI – anywhere and at any time.

"The Wyse X class combines the performance required for mobile devices with the security and manageability benefits of VDI," said Param Desai, Senior Director, Product Management at Wyse Technology. "Given that there are more than 1 billion mobile workers worldwide, the combination of our mobile thin clients with VMware View™ 5 or Wyse WSM solves a significant problem facing today's Post-PC era businesses making the move to VDI and the cloud."

Given the rise of cloud computing and VDI, businesses of all sizes are looking to bring the management, flexibility and security benefits of virtualization to their mobile workforce. Wyse X class comes in two flexible profiles, ideal for today’s busy and increasingly demanding mobile workforce:
  • The Wyse X class c family has an 11” LED backlit display. It features a choice of SUSE Linux, Windows Embedded Standard 2009 & 7 operating systems and Wyse WSM for provisioned environments.
  • The new next-generation Wyse X class m family mobile thin client powerhouse also features Windows Embedded Standard 2009 and 7, a crisp 14” LED backlit display and a dual-core AMD G-Series Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) that combines CPU, GPU and HD video decoding in one piece of silicon, as well as advanced SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connectivity.
"Mobile thin clients mitigate the fast-growing problem of PC theft. As laptop theft grows at a steady rate, the cost to businesses & universities continues to rise," according to David Nielsen, Director of Technology & Budget & Building Manager at University of Nebraska at Omaha. "The success of our programs depends on the security of our information, but without sacrificing student productivity and computer performance. The X class devices in use at University of Nebraska at Omaha are invaluable to the success of our students and the sanity of our IT department."

"Today's mobile workforce requires secure and flexible access to their desktop and applications at the office, at home or on the road," said Vittorio Viarengo, vice president, End-User Computing, VMware. "VMware View™ 5 in conjunction with the Wyse X90m7 integrates desktop virtualization and high-performance mobility to deliver a seamless end-user experience.”

"Bridging the gap between VDI and user mobility is yet another criteria for businesses to accelerate their desktop transformation strategies," according to Mark Bowker, Senior Analyst Enterprise Strategy Group. "Unlike laptop PCs, the Wyse X class delivers a unique mobile experience focused on lowering TCO, enhanced security, and centralized management options."

The Wyse X class supporting VMware View local mode offline functionality will be available with the release of VMware View 5. More information on the Wyse X class can be found at http://www.wyse.com/products/hardware/mobile/
